Osmosis FAQ

Do all boats get osmosis?

"There is always some osmosis on older boat (20 years +) and it shouldn't be a problem" is fairly close to the mark. However whether it is a problem or not depends upon the extent and how developed it is... how large are the blisters... how deep... etc... really a matter of judgment.

How long will a treatment last?

The current treatments will deal with the problem for a long period ... if correctly treated this should be in the 15 - 20 years range but will not be an "absolute cure". Most yards / paint suppliers will only offer guarantees against further blistering for generally 5 years only. However I usually find that most coatings are good for at least 10 years and often 15. Coatings / treatments have improved over the years so the more recent ones I would suspect will be longer lasting ... we will have to wait and see I'm afraid ???

Should I treat my boat at the first signs of osmosis?

Osmosis once started (ie: blistering) will progress and generally it is worth waiting to treat the hull until the blistering is fairly extensive, more extensive than just "wicking" and high moisture readings.

Does treatment increase the value of my boat?

In many respects boats that have been recently treated will have an increase in value. Although not always the case...

How much will osmosis effect the value of my boat?

A reduction in sale price of approx. half the cost of a full treatment.... is often reached when a vessel has been found to have "osmosis" during survey. The reduction is generally some what less than half cost on smaller/cheaper boats but does depend on offer price etc.

Will my boat be easy to sell once it has been treated?

Selling a boat that has been treated (preferably in a yard with documented history / warranty etc) should be no problem.
